You can drive on the beach north of the 10th Street access in Gearhart — that boundary is set by Oregon State Parks , and the drivable stretch runs all the way to the South Jetty near Astoria. Four-wheel drive is strongly recommended by the state, and in our experience that recommendation is earned. We've watched front-wheel-drive cars get stuck north of the access point — not occasionally, predictably. The soft sand above the tide line catches two-wheel-drive vehicles every summer weekend.

Three things to know about eating in Gearhart. First, the town is small and the dining options reflect that — you're not choosing between fifteen restaurants. Second, Pacific Way Bakery & Cafe, which most older guides still recommend, is permanently closed as of early 2026. Third, the dining scene actually got better recently.

McMenamins Sand Trap is the anchor — a full pub menu with local beers on tap, inside the McMenamins Gearhart Hotel on the golf course. Open seven days a week, and it doubles as your default rainy-afternoon plan.

Prep Kitchen opened in 2025 at 3601 Highway 101 and handles the gap Pacific Way left. Grab-and-go PNW fare — salads, sandwiches, prepared meals. One important detail: they're open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. only. Closed weekends. Plan accordingly.

Fultano's Pizza at Gearhart Bowl (3518 Highway 101 N) pairs pizza with a 12-lane bowling alley and a full bar. It's the late-night option and the rainy-day family default.

Gearhart Beach itself is dog-friendly year-round — no leash law on the sand, though dogs must be under voice control per city ordinance, and you'll want to leash up near the elk. The town is walkable and flat, which makes it better for dogs than most Oregon Coast destinations where beach access requires steep trail descents.

The two hotels in town also accept pets — McMenamins charges a per-pet nightly fee, and The Drifthaven welcomes pets in all 12 rooms — but neither gives your dog the space of a full condo with a living room and a patio or balcony.

However, there is one thing to do in Cannon Beach that you can't pass up during your next visit. Going clam digging in Oregon is a time-honored experience and tradition on the West Coast. Learn all about razor clams and search for them with friends and family. Once you've collected your allotted 15 clams, bring them back with you for a tasty, local treat.

Clam Digging in Oregon for Beginners

If this is your first-time clam digging Oregon, you're in for an experience you'll never forget. Clatsop beaches have the densest razor clam population, but you can also go to other beaches in the area for your harvest. Please note that an individual must take the first 15 clams they find, regardless of size or broken shells. Often when diggers attempt to rebury clams they don't want, they inevitably end up killing most of those shellfish. Clams with broken shells will be just as tasty as their unmarred brethren. If you aren't satisfied with the shell sizes, you can go out the next day and try again.

When & How to Start Digging for Pacific Razor Clams

Plan on being at the beach two hours before the tide reaches its lowest point. Once you're there with your shovel (or PVC pipe-turned-clam-gun), search the sand for dime-sized dimples. If you don't see any, pound the shovel handle under the surf so that clams will create the dimple. When it comes to digging, you have to be fast.

Razor clams won't hesitate to burrow further into the sand, and they can dig down nearly four feet. When you dig, make sure you place the spade straight down into the sand and then push the handle forward. This inhibits the clams from making a getaway. Carefully retract the shovel and replace it with a (preferably gloved) hand. Retrieve your bounty and repeat until you've caught up to 15 clams. The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife has provided a visual guide with additional tips on clam digging in Oregon. Some of our most popular species are salmon and sturgeon! Lucky for you our Oregon Coast resorts are near some of the best salmon fishing in the area! Charter boats are available throughout the season. The Columbia River provides Salmon, Steelhead, Sturgeon, and Kokanee. While the river has salmon almost year-round, there are three different salmon runs. The spring salmon run starts in early January, and the last fall salmon run usually ends in late October. So, all together it adds up to ten months of running salmon in the Columbia River! Of course, fishing regulations are what structure your opportunity to fish! As for Sturgeons, if they range from 4 to 6 feet long, you can keep them. Sturgeons don't spawn yearly, making them a prized catch! The best Sturgeon fishing months are May, June, and July.
